A catch basin is a tiny box (about 1 foot by 1 foot for domestic use) buried at a low location in the yard. A metal grate atop the box prevents big debris from entering the basin. As water flows down the sloping terrain, it flows into the catch basin. Solids in the runoff settle to the bottom of the box, while the water flows into a conduit that leads to the sewer system or another body of water, such as a local stream.
There are numerous advantages to adding catch basins. In addition to removing water from your property so that it does not harm your home or yard, it is also good at capturing debris before it enters the storm drain or sewer system, so preventing future service difficulties. A catch basin can also enhance your landscape and increase your home's worth.
Catch basins, like most things in life, are imperfect. Before having one installed, you should be aware of certain prerequisites and potential problems.
Consider installing a catch basin if you have a damp yard or other water drainage concerns on your property. Because water can be difficult to manage, it's important to have an expert check your yard to identify the optimal discharge position and method.
