The right temperature for your heater could seem a little like Goldilocks getting the ideal mattress. Too hot and you're at risk of burns and scorching. If you're cold, you'll feel cold during the bath.
We're happy to announce that today we'll make sure that you can enjoy hot water that is just right and also saves cash on your energy costs.
The majority of tank-based water heaters are set to the standard setting of 140ºF. This is a good temperature; however, it is probably hotter than what the average homeowner requires. It's also too high when you have an elderly family member or there are children in your living space because it's hot enough to cause boiling water and cause serious burns.
To increase the effectiveness and safety of your heater, the most common recommendation is setting the thermostat to 120ºF. This will avoid dangerous burns and allow the water to be warm enough to enjoy a luxurious shower or dishwashing.
Why are the majority of water heaters set to 140º F in the first place? Manufacturers set their default temperature high for a variety of reasons. Most likely, they do not have to pay the energy bill! The reduction in your water's temperature by 10 to 20 degrees could help you save up to 10% of your energy bill.
Another reason that your water heater has been set to 140ºF is to lower the chance of legionella bacteria, which is the bacteria that can cause Legionnaires disease. If you are suffering from weak immunity, then it could be recommended to keep your water heater at 140ºF. If not, it is in good health to set it 10 to 20 degrees lower.
Are you aware of the temp settings of your hot water tank? Take a look and reduce it if you need to save energy.
