It can be very annoying to have a spinning faucet handle, especially because it is quite common and can happen repeatedly. The problem can be fixed with a few wrenches and a screwdriver for only $20.
The faucet cartridge can wear down, which is often the reason for a spinning faucet handle. The handle attaches to a cartridge, which controls the flow of water. The handle may feel loose or spin when the cartridge has been removed.
These are some simple steps to solve the problem.
1. Turn off the water
You will find the valves that turn off the water to the sink below the faucet. To turn off the faucet's water supply, turn the handle clockwise. You may need to shut off the water supply to your home while you are working on a bathtub. To make sure that nothing, such as screws, goes down the drain and vanishes, you will also need to cover it.
2. Remove faucet handles and cover plates
You will need to either remove the cover plates or the handles depending on the position of your faucet cartridge's handles. The handles can be removed by hand. However, you will need to remove the cover plates using a flathead screwdriver. You may need an allen wrench or a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the connecting screw.
3. Take out the lock nut
The faucet cartridge should be removed by removing the handle. This nut can be removed using a pipe wrench. The cartridge may have a small brass bolt on the top. This is a good idea to keep, since not all replacement cartridges include one.
4. Remove faucet cartridge
The faucet cartridge should be easy to lift off once the locking nut has been removed. Use pliers if it is a little difficult. To compare the sizes, bring the cartridge you already have with you to the hardware shop if you have not yet purchased the new cartridge.
5. Replace the faucet cartridge
Once you have the correct replacement faucet cartridge, you can put it on and go back through all of the steps, going backwards to assemble the handle. Turn the water on again and check how it worked.
